November 21, I heard from a friend of mine at the Chicago Tribune she's female, and you'll see why that matters in a second and she said, "It was so stupid!
Then gallons of blood and we move on. She wasn't kidding, either, that's just what this movie was. Don't worry about the plot, it's not really a concern.
Don't worry about the script either, the lines are so over the top and shallow that you know a man wrote this script without allowing anyone to comment on it.
At the same time, this movie is just plain fun. You will find yourself laughing from the moment the movie starts to the ending which you won't be glancing at your watch while waiting for.
There are funny lines, funny situations, and stuff that is so impossible in the real world that you can't help but chuckle. The directing, as opposed to the writing, was done very well, especially for a movie like this.
If you take the directing too seriously, the script won't work, which is probably why Michael Davis did both. Clive Owen delivers another strong performance, adapting to the cheesy script and outrageous events like a participant in a prank or gag.
Monica Bellucci plays the most serious role in the film, and still takes to mocking her life and situation in this movie like the rest of them.
My favorite character would still have to be the sly Paul Giamatti, who is given some pretty crazy situations himself but they are coupled with the only lines of any intelligence or longer than about four words.
By the end of this movie, I was having a lot of fun watching a plot unfold that I didn't really care about. That doesn't deter the film, though, because it's kind of like a stunt show, you're not really concerned with the story.
I loved it and, apparently, so did most of the audience. It really reminded me of seeing, well, a live action movie that was more like a video game we even have coordinated colors for the costumes of the "bad guys" in the various "levels".
I'd like to use this film as an example to my former favorite critic Roger Ebert as a perfect example of how video games can be construed in the same light as video games, because Roger, this is clearly a movie made by a large video game fan.

User Reviews. In the mids, shoot 'em ups became a niche genre based on design conventions established in the s, and increasingly catered to specialist enthusiasts, particularly in Japan.
A "shoot 'em up", also known as a "shmup" or "STG" the common Japanese abbreviation for "shooting games" , is a game in which the protagonist combats a large number of enemies by shooting at them while dodging their fire.
The controlling player must rely primarily on reaction times to succeed. Some restrict the genre to games featuring some kind of craft, using fixed or scrolling movement.
Shoot 'em ups are a subgenre of shooter game , in turn a type of action game. These games are usually viewed from a top-down or side-view perspective , and players must use ranged weapons to take action at a distance.
The player's avatar is typically a vehicle or spacecraft under constant attack. Thus, the player's goal is to shoot as quickly as possible at anything that moves or threatens them to reach the end of the level with a boss battle.
Some games feature overwhelming numbers of enemy projectiles and the player has to memorise their patterns to survive. Also in some games, levels can be completed by mission conditions in a time limit, destroy certain objects, or collect items.
These games belong to one of the fastest-paced video game genres. Large numbers of enemy characters programmed to behave in an easily predictable manner are typically featured.
The basic gameplay tends to be straightforward with many variety of weapons. Characters can instantly change direction with no inertia , and projectiles move in a straight line at constant speeds.
As such, players tend to fire indiscriminately, and their weapons only damage legitimate targets. Shoot 'em ups are categorized by design elements, particularly viewpoint and movement: .
Fixed shooters such as Space Invaders restrict the protagonist to a single axis of motion, enemies attack in a single direction such as descending from the top of the screen , and each level is contained within a single screen.
Tube shooters feature craft flying through an abstract tube, such as Tempest and Gyruss. There is still a single axis of motion, making these a subset of fixed shooters.
Rail shooters limit the player to moving around the screen while the game follows a specific route; these games often feature an "into the screen" viewpoint, with which the action is seen from behind the player character , and moves "into the screen", while the player retains control over dodging.
Light-Gun games that are "on-rails" are not in the shoot-em-up category but the first-person shooter category, and the term has also been applied to scripted events in FPS games such as Call of Duty.
Vertically scrolling shooters feature action that is viewed from above and scrolls up or occasionally down the screen. Side-scrolling shooters feature action that is viewed side-on and scrolls horizontally.
Isometrically scrolling shooters : A small number of scrolling shooters, such as Sega 's Zaxxon , feature an isometric point of view. Multidirectional shooters feature degree movement where the protagonist may rotate and move in any direction.
Cute 'em ups feature brightly colored graphics depicting surreal settings and enemies. Cute 'em ups tend to have unusual, oftentimes completely bizarre opponents for the player to fight, with key games in the genre including Parodius , Cotton , Twinbee , and Harmful Park.
Run and gun or " run 'n' gun " describes a shoot 'em up in which the protagonist fights on foot, us usually with the ability to jump. Run and gun games may use side scrolling , vertical scrolling or isometric viewpoints and may feature multidirectional movement.
The genre's exact origins are a matter of some confusion. The game featured combat between two spacecraft. However, it was not until 's seminal Space Invaders , created by Tomohiro Nishikado at Japan's Taito Corporation , that the shooter genre became prolific.
Wells because the developers were unable to render the movement of aircraft; in turn, the aliens replaced human enemies because of moral concerns regarding the portrayal of killing humans on the part of Taito Corporation.
As with subsequent shoot 'em ups of the time, the game was set in space as the available technology only permitted a black background. The game also introduced the idea of giving the player a number of " lives ".
It popularised a more interactive style of gameplay with the enemies responding to the player-controlled cannon's movement, and it was the first video game to popularise the concept of achieving a high score , being the first to save the player's score.
In , Namco 's Galaxian —"the granddaddy of all top-down shooters", according to IGN—was released. In , Defender established scrolling in shoot 'em ups, offering horizontally extended levels.
Unlike most later games in the genre, the player could move in either direction. It was the first scrolling shooter to offer multiple, distinct levels.
Vertical scrolling shooters emerged around the same time. Namco's Xevious , released in , is frequently cited as the first vertical scrolling shooter and, although it was in fact preceded by several other games of that type, it is considered one of the most influential.
Sega's Space Harrier , a rail shooter released in , broke new ground graphically and its wide variety of settings across multiple levels gave players more to aim for than high scores.
